Can you ‘reel’ your way into language learning?

By Moonstone Institute 5 min read

Today, resources are ubiquitous and 5G unlimited. And yet, one of the pitfalls of those who seek an education on the internet are numerous. Apart from difficulties in consistency and structure, language learners have some prickly problems of their own. As children, we learn to speak our mother-tongues by recognising, repeating and recalling how our caregivers speak. Learning a language as an adult relies on the same principles. Which means, speaking, expressing and voicing yourself in the target language is key to acquiring proficiency.

Passively consuming reel after reel gives the impression of exposure and familiarity but what it misses is that recognising speech patterns or words does not amount to language proficiency unless complemented by active speaking. By active speaking, we mean a process of understanding the structure of language through repetition, time-tested methods to aid in recall and one on one attention where the teacher corrects you, should you slip.

Time and again language experts have insisted that exposure to speaking is the biggest factor in having a successful journey with language. If you are frustrated with hours of passively receiving grammar rules that have not been put to real life scenarios, then what you need is an in-person class where real-life scenarios are played out everyday so that you can flex you English muscles and strengthen them.
